MALI WRIGHT got his professional career off to a flyer at Headingley rugby league in September 2021 forcing Antony Woolery to retire after two rounds.
His second fight in February left VIP chief Steve Wood insisting, Wright gets in better shape after he weighed in at 14st 6lb — almost two stone heavier than his debut. Then, he was held to a draw by Sheffield debutant Luis Palmer when more was expected.
He shed over a stone when he boxed at Leeds Arena in March and eased to a points win a rematch against Palmer. Wright is trained by Nick Manners who has played a role in the progression of Josh Warrington’s pro career.
Mali was introduced to boxing at 16 when he loved the gym, but concentrated on weight training. It was a further three years before he began boxing competitively and made rapid progress.
During his amateur career, Wright reached the English National Elite semi-finals in 2019 dropping a split decision against Ben Jarvis.
He studied finance and accounting at Leeds Beckett University.
