He returned to his hometown for his first fight of 2023 in February and came through a seriously tough test against Darryl Tapfuma, winning 58-56 in a six round battle that he learned so much from. Smith was given a good workout by Clayton Bricknell in July, suffering a flash knockdown but winning clearly after six rounds.
