Rhys got his career off to a winning start in September 2021 outpointing veteran Lewis van Poetsch where he conceded a more than a stone. He gave away four pounds in his next fight, but still came away with a clear points win over another reliable journeyman, Dale Arrowsmith.
Wood completed a points hat-trick in March 2022 when he outpointed VIP managed journeyman Danny Little. He was expected to be given a hard time when he faced Liverpool rival Jay McCarthy in June, but won all four rounds.
Woods had a night forget in September when he was knocked out inside two rounds by
experienced Serge Ambomo. Trainer Ryan Bradley decided the best way to erase that defeat would be to enter VIP Boxing’s four-man tournament.
Few expected him to beat unbeaten Casey Brown, but he got home and his hand was raised after six hard fought rounds to book a clash against Johnny Kiely in the final. Woods showed guts and fire against Kiely when the vacant Central Area Super-Welterweight title was on the line, but Kiely was victorious as Bradley threw in the towel in round six moments after his man was dropped for the second time.
His return in July was a draw against VIP stablemate Owen Kirk - a fight he believes enough was done to win.
