‘NUTTY BOY’ Mason Cartwright’s lip gave him a touch of stardom, but his British Super-
Welterweight title challenges against Troy Williamson and Samuel Antwi showed he can also shoot from the hip.

Cartwright made headlines after his unlucky ninth round injury defeat in a vacant WBO European Welterweight title clash against Darren Tetley at Elland Road in May 2018.
He suffered a gruesome mouth injury ruling him out in the penultimate round when ahead on the cards and the X-rated images went viral worldwide.

When he arrived at Leeds General Infirmary, Cartwright was greeted by Davina McCall and the A ,and E Live cameras that saw Mason featured in the ITV1 show. That injury kept Cartwright out for ten months, but he returned with points wins over Genadij ,Krajevskij and Edvinas Puplauskas.

That led to a clash against Danny Ball for the vacant WBC International Silver Welterweight title in October 2019. He was boxing well and appeared ahead, but walked onto big shots in round three and was stopped.

He returned two months later boxing at Super-Welterweight and stopped Alexander Zeledon in the fifth round. A 23 month lay-off followed, but Mason returned with a win when African Daniel Lartey quit after a round.

Cartwright turned professional in October 2014 and entered 2022 knowing he cannot afford another setback. When the phone rang to challenge British champ Williamson in Newcastle in March few gave him a chance. And although he was on the wrong end of a points defeat he covered himself in glory in a fight described by Boxing News as a classic.

A huge upset looked on the cards when Williamson was dropped early on, but the champion recovered and managed to retain his title.

Plenty of fans believe Cartwright deserves a rematch, but if that doesn’t materialise he has proven that he belongs among the domestic elite. After a couple of marking time fights he was nominated for a crack at the vacant British championship again, with Antwi his fellow challenger.

The boys delivered one of the best British fights of 2023 in September, but unfortunately Mason fell short being stopped in the 12th and final round of a sensational battle.
