Sonny Taylor

ABOUT

SONNY TAYLOR was on the brink of going to prison and life may have taken a different path, but a stretch of community service at Vulcan Boxing Club where he helped build an allotment turned things around.

He initially planned to campaign at heavyweight, but after taking a nutritionist on board he decided cruiserweight was within his reach.

Taylor, who is trained by Tommy Coyle, signed with VIP Promotions in January 2019 and has done little wrong so far.

One of his wins came on points against tried and trusted journeyman Elvis Dube. His one fight in 2020 came in February when Pawel Strykowski was stopped in five rounds.

Sonny gave more away 60lb when in June 2021, but still managed to floor Phil Williams en-route to a clear points win over four rounds.

Sonny then had more than a year out but returned at Doncaster Racecourse and outpointed experienced Ossie Jervier over six rounds.

Taylor returned to his home town of Hull in October 2021 and body shots accounted for Cameroon’s Christian Donfack’s defeat inside two rounds.

It was back to Hull in April 2023 and he made light work of Ryan Labourn, stopping him in five rounds and showing that it was time for a step up.

In November 2023, Taylor stepped up to eight rounds and passed that test with flying colours with a shutout points win against Perry Howe.

He has gained great experience in sparring working with top-class boxers including Bob Ajisafe, Jack Massey, Richard Riakporhe, Craig Richards and Dec Spelman.
