FORMER Rotunda ABC boxer Brian Phillips might have lost a wafer thin decision to Michael Gomez Jr, but was involved in arguably the domestic fight of 2022.
When they met in October with his rival’s Central Area Super-Featherweight title on the line, they traded blows for ten rounds in Oldham, but after 30 minutes of ferocious action, Gomez clinched a 96-95 verdict.

Phillips revels in his reputation as a throwback who never turns a fight down in March 2023 took on 13-0 Rhys Edwards losing on points over six in front of the Sky TV cameras. He won his first four fights, but then ran into top prospect Nick Ball who snapped his unbeaten record. Phillips has shown that defeat doesn’t mean the end and bounced back superbly with five wins on the spin. After an 18 month lay-off, Phillips was due to box at Liverpool Olympia in September 2021, but an issue with British Boxing Board of Control doctors forced a late postponement of the card Instead he picked up a job in the away corner two days later than the original date and played his part in a thriller losing 96-95 to Jimmy First.

Few would dispute that Brian deserves a return against Yorkshireman First or Gomez Jr He bounced back on November 2021 winning 40-36 against reliable Lithuanian Simas Volosinas before points wins over Matar Sambou and Taka Bembere prior to the Gomez Jr classic. Phillips spent time in a California training camp with Issac Lowe and picked up tips from Tyson Fury who was preparing for a Deontay Wilder fight.
